Lance Corporal John G. Lynn
The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present. It is possible that he was the John Gorman Lynn born on 25 August 1888 at Albany Cottage, Carrickfergus, County Antrim, the fourth of five children of accountant's clerk Henry Lynn and his wife Mary (née Rodgers). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Albany Cottage with his parents and three of his siblings and working as a mercantile clerk.
Lynn enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 19 and 24 November 1915 (No.1956 – later Corps of Hussars No.71646). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve camp before embarking for France between 1916 or 1918. There he was posted to one of the squadrons of the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment. This regiment served as corps cavalry to VII, XIX, then V Corps from its establishment in May 1916 until February-March 1918, when it was dismounted and converted to a cyclist unit.
This meant a 25 per cent reduction in the regiment's numbers, so this may have been the time that Lynn was attached to the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers).
On 18 February 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
